The Hypocritic Oath
With echoes of Michael Huffington the forces of truth have once again rousted a demon from the halls of the US Congress. The 'Living a Lie' award for today goes to Ed Schrock formerly of the 2nd District of Virginia. A pity really, since Ed was rated quite highly by The National Journal. Why is Ed leaving the hallowed halls of Congress and fleeing back to Virginia Beach with his tail between his legs? Well it turns out that, his wife and sponsorship of the Defense of Marriage Amendment notwithstanding, Ed is apparently either gay or bi. According to various news sources Ed had left some voice mails on a phone service used by men to arrange sexual liasons with other men. Some gay activists somehow got ahold of at least one of his recordings and posted it on their website. Well Ed, You might enjoy getting together with Jack Ryan for a beer, maybe take in a sex show, although don't take it personally if he won't have public gay sex with you, that may just not be his thing. At least not the gay part....
I for one am sick and tired of these pathetic self-loathing weasels bringing their emotional problems into the political arena. Can't you guys afford a shrink? Just because you hate yourself, and can't come to grips with the reality of your sexuality, does not make it okay for you to make life more difficult for the people who are comfortable being gay. Do you have any concept of how pathological you are? Does it make you feel like a real man preventing other people from being happy? As for the religious aspect of this all, I don't see much hope for you here either. If it's wrong to be gay, then you are doomed. If it isn't wrong, than you are torturing yourself and others needlessly. And it's hard to imagine how you reconcile your supposedly Christian beliefs with mean-spirited vindictiveness.
And do you really think that you are being fair to your wife? You get all sanctimonious about gays wanting to marry because you claim that they are making a mockery out of the institution. But at least they are trying to marry people who they can be completely emotionally honest with. No, the real affront to marriage is selfish, narrow-minded thugs like you, Ed, who not only act out your anger at other's happiness by trying to repress them, you also drag down the women unfortunate enough to marry you as well. If marriage needs protection from anyone, it's you, Ed, not gays.
On a completely unrelated note, I got another letter into The New York Time today. Here's the text:
To the Editor:
Missing from Jim Gogek's alarming analysis of the problems with teenage drinking is some comparison with other cultures (Op-Ed, Aug. 25). Of course, such a comparison might illustrate that the problem is not people drinking when they are young but our society's unhealthy relationship with alcohol.
Treating alcohol as forbidden fruit up to a certain age, and freely available only after most people have moved away from their parents, seems like a prime way to foster irresponsible drinking. Perhaps these young people should be taught that alcohol has been part of our culture for thousands of years, and introduced to it in moderation at the dinner table where they may learn their limits with parental supervision.
Fighting teenage drinking is more likely to have the unintended effect of driving it deeper underground, making it less likely that problems will come to adult notice before they become police matters.
